Lifetime Announces Their  First LGBTQ Holiday Movie

Move over, straight cheesy cliché holiday movies, it’s the gays turn to celebrate now!

In Lifetime’s plans for 30 new movies making up what they’re calling “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime,” the company will feature its first ever same-sex couple central romance. Although we don’t have too much news on who will be starring in the film, a synopsis of the film has been posted.

The plot goes a little something like this: “Hugo, a New York Corporate lawyer and his best friend Madelyn head to Milwaukee to spend the holidays with his mom Kate, who is also in charge of the local Christmas celebrations. Ever the matchmaker, Kate arranges for Hugo to run into Patrick, Hugo’s high school friend and secret crush, who has recently returned after a successful stint in Silicon Valley.

As they enjoy the local holiday festivities together, Hugo and Patrick’s attraction to each other is undeniable and it looks as though Kate’s well-intentioned Santa-style matchmaking is a success. But as Hugo receives word of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must decide what is most important to him.”

Sounds corny and cheesy, right? That’s absolutely the best part! As a gay man growing up, there was almost little to no representation of gay couples on television or even in media. I remember when I was younger watching these corny movies and thinking, “wouldn’t it be amazing to have a kiss in the snow? To bring home a boyfriend for Christmas dinner?” I never thought it was unattainable. Though, every time I had a little crush, and every time that little crush escaped with no hope of an actual relationship (or a healthy one), it seemed impossible for me to have my happily ever after.

Lifetime’s decision is in direct opposition of their rival company, Hallmark’s, decisions to actually actively avoid creating any films with LGBTQ+ relationships at the forefronts. Though, it is worth noting Hallmark has come under new management as of recently, which has released a statement assuring their viewers that LGBTQ+ films are to come. That company has said it once before, so I guess we’ll believe it when we see it.

But who knows. This may be the gayest Christmas ever!
