Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Roslynn celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary in their hometown in middle Georgia, a far cry from last year’s 300-person event that included celebrities like the Clintons and Garth Brooks.
Achieving 76 years of marriage is so unusual that the U.S. Census Bureau has no statistics on how many couples make it that far. According to the Atlanta-Constitution, only 6% of married couples even make it to 50 years. When you Google a list f traditional wedding anniversary gifts, it stops at 60.
“The best thing I ever did was marrying Rosalynn. That’s the pinnacle of my life,” Carter said in 2015.
The Carters are the longest-married presidential couple in U.S. history, followed by former president George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, who were married for over 73 years until Barbara Bush’s death in 2018.
In March 2019, President Carter became the longest-living president in American history.
