So today we awake to the news that full frontal images of Jesse Williams (hot Dr. Avery from Grey’s Anatomy) were leaked from his Tony Award-nominated performance on Broadway in Take Me Out, while Britney Spears posted nude pictures of her pre-pregnant self on Instagram. Both images resulted in both squeals of delight from some fans, and righteous indignation, and it’s so interesting to see the difference between the two.
Jesse Williams’ images were leaked from a performance that required all viewers to lock away their cellphones before the play, which has been running since last month. I am personally surprised it took so long. And this might even be a publicity stunt, to get more people to go to the play, now that they know there’s a full frontal locker room scene (it certainly got my attention, and I love baseball and Jesse Williams). It is a violation of both Williams’ privacy (because he did not authorize the images to be shared) and the theater’s policy, but I doubt anything will come of it.
Britney Spears, newly freed from her restrictive conservatorship, and newly pregnant, posted some pictures of herself on instragram. Some fans saw this as her way of emphatically owning herself and her image (as well as her body), while others (notably the UK’s Daily Mail) wondered if was proof that she should still be under a conservatorship. The internet even asked itself if it was now Britney’s conservator?
I just find it so interesting to see the Williams’ nudes portrayed as a violation of his rights while Spears’ are almost played as a violation of our rights.
It’s Britney’s body, her choice. Power to her.
And power to Williams as well, for choosing to bare all the play.
