Advant garde singer and performer Amanda Palmer announced on Twitter that her husband of nine years, fantasy author Neil Gaiman had left her and their four year-old son in New Zealand while he relocated to the UK. The biggest surprise was that she hadn’t told Gaiman that she would be making the announcement and he, like the rest of us, learned that she had gone public with their break up on Twitter. She also gave further details of their split on her Patreon account.
Gaiman and Palmer had left the US after Donald Trump’s election. Gaiman, 59, was born in England but has lived in the U.S. for most of his adult life, including his first marriage. Gaiman is the author of Good Omens, American Gods, Coraline and The Sandman. Palmer, 44, is the leader of the performance band The Dresden Dolls. They both have been very public about their open marriage.
Palmer stated that the split was not a result of the Coronavirus isolation, but that it had contributed to the stress. She wrote, “All I can say is that I’m heartbroken, I really am profoundly struggling, and I need to call my community to me like never before.”
The next day, Gaiman went on Twitter and acknowledged the break up. “I see @amandapalmer has told people that we (like much of the world) are going through rocky times right now. It is true, we are. It’s really hard, and I’d like to request privacy (as I’m not going to be talking about it publicly) and kindness, for us and for Ash.”
