You’ve seen the show. You know the twists. You silently judge the protagonist of the episode. You think to yourself, “I would have done better than that.” Are you certain about that? There is a way to beta test that theory, and see for yourself.
Have you ever wanted to star in your own Black Mirror episode? This is what the Black Mirror Experience offers. The Shed arts center in Manhattan is hosting the United States debut of The Black Mirror Experience, an interactive exhibition. The Black Mirror Experience opened on June 20th, 2026, and is a personalized adventure based on what you want to accomplish. The journey starts with building a temporary profile, using one of the kiosks when you enter the exhibit. The profile is built from your photo, voice, and responses to questions about what you want to do with your life.
After answering a few questions, you are provided with a Life Agent- your own personal AI assistant. Exhibit guests are then given a VR headset, so that you may interact with your life agent. By tapping into your deepest aspirations, your Life Agent shows you the digital world that you create for yourself. The AI is there to help you fully actualize your goals. The experience is about an hour long, and starts off relatively uneventful. Things are all right with your AI assistant, and then it takes an unexpected turn.
You are confronted with situations that build based on the answers you gave. In addition, a behavioral profile is built from your decisions. If there is a gap between what you pronounce, and what you choose, it could be exposed.
While it is not possible to “spoil it” since it was an interactive tailored experience, my playthrough turned into a game with high stakes, involving skirmishes with rogue AI minions, a final boss battle, and an escape from a secret facility. In retrospect, it is a bit wild that I was correctly tagged as a gamer.
Having gone through the experience, it was definitely a trip. There is a point in the journey where the system puts to you a question with moral implications. The AI does what you say, but it doesn’t necessarily care how it does it. For this writer, it hits at the ethics of having an AI carry out tasks on your behalf, regardless of the effects that it may have on other people around you in the real world. It’ll make you ask, is what you desire, right? It is reminiscent of Wario meme: “I’ve won, but at what cost?”
The Black Mirror Experience is a fun, interactive exhibit that pulls you into the world of the 7 season science fiction anthology series. No prior knowledge of the show is necessary. The Black Mirror Experience runs until September 6, 2026.
