Romancing the Runoff Raising Big Bucks for the January Georgia Senate Races
By Lori Perkins
It should be no secret to any of you that Stacey Abrams, the genius behind turning Georgia blue for Biden, is a romance writer, among many other incredible things. So it should come as no surprise to any of you that the romance community has gotten behind her efforts to get the massive blue vote out again on January 5th when there is a runoff election for two Senate seats that could turn the entire Senate blue.
Organized by best selling romance writers Courtney Milan, Alyssa Cole, and Bree Bridges and Donna Herren (the latter being the team writing as Kit Rocha), the goal of this fundraising auction is to raise money to help support the Georgia Senate Runoffs by supporting Fair Fight, the New Georgia Project, and Black Voters Matter.
As of this reporting they have already raised $310,000 (that’s 125% of a goal set at $250,00)! The original goal for the entire auction was $20,000, but in less than five hours after going live with donation links, that goal was blown off the roof. The campaign had raised more than $85,000 before the auction had even begun. This is going to be epic!
Originally, most of the items up for auction were offered by genre romance authors who had donating prizes like signed books, custom-made book dresses (and dresses that appeared on romance readers’ favorite covers!), manuscript critiques, and stays at a writing cabin. There are now participating editors from big and small publishing houses, agents from all over the country, and authors from all genres who have donated items or work to the auction and are actively promoting the auction all over social media. However, this week Neil Gaimen donated a signed limited edition of Neverwhere, and accredited Hollywood scriptwriters have offered script writing evaluations, so the auction is growing.
