Despite the positive news of Elliot Page coming out as trans just two months ago, Page now announces that he and his wife, Emma Portner, will be splitting after a three-year marriage.
Though the news sounds sudden, according to People the couple had split way back in the Summer of 2020 and have been on estranged ground ever since. As Page said after filing for divorce in a Manhattan court, “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer. We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
The divorce seems to be a long time coming. On social media, the last time Page had posted about Emma was back in March at the start of the lockdown, but nothing since. For Emma, she had not posted about the two of them since 2019.
Although normally when celebrities mention they “remain close friends” it’s usually to keep the peace, it seems Elliot and Emma really do mean it and that they wish each other all the best.
When Elliot Page had announced his coming out and the name he had chosen for himself, Emma wrote on her Instagram “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer, and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in an of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.” Along with her statement Emma posted a screenshot of Page’s own statement.
