When my boyfriend recently had to leave for a month, I felt a mix of emotions. I was happy and excited for him. He was on a road trip across the United States with some of his close friends. They pitched a tent in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. I was glad to be back in New York, looking forward to establishing my own routine in the city. But, after a few days, I really began to miss him. We texted and called, but something felt ordinary. I wanted to do something more. I was looking to communicate in a new way, not just a message notification. I wanted something more special.
So, I started browsing the internet for new ways to feel more connected. I wanted to also figure out a way to digitally mark the days until we would be together again. I then found the app “Couple Joy.” I immediately asked him to download it too.
We both started using it, and it slowly became something special. It let us count down the days until we were able to see each other again. We could share how we were feeling with a tap and play little games or answer thoughtful questions. For example, prompts included “what city do you want us to explore next” and “what’s a romantic gesture you’ve always appreciated.” The app helped us feel close in ways texting could not. “Couple Joy” made our relationship feel present in my day. Every time I opened my phone and saw the little countdown widget, I smiled.
If you are in a long distance relationship, or just spending some time apart, I highly recommend “Couple Joy.” It is free, easy to use, and is a nice way to keep love close. A month can feel like no time away with this app.
