We’re all excited about the forthcoming Barbie film, to be released in summer of 2023 starring Ryan Gosling as Ken and Margot Robbie as Barbie. Greta Gerwig is directing, and she’s a little quirky, so, IMHO, that just added to the excitement, but I don’t think anyone expected her first Barbie trailer to be an homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001!
The one-minute trailer opens with a giant Barbie dressed in her original 1959 black and white striped one-piece swimsuit as little girls playing with baby dolls smash their dolls to bits at the arrival of their new goddess. It’s an almost-shot-for-shot recreation of the ape scene in 2001.
Matthew Gaydos posted a brilliant side-by-side comparison of the trailer, so we could all see how spot on the Barbie/2001 trailer is.
