In another first for Broadway, trans actor Angelina Ross, 41, (of Pose fame) will make her Broadway debut in the roll of Roxy Hart in Chicago starting September 12th for an eight-week run.

Ross will become the first openly transgender actor to play the murderous vixen Roxie Hart in the long-running musical and will join the ranks of other trans Broadway stars such as Peppermint who became the first openly trans woman to originate a principal role on Broadway, starring in the Go-Go’s jukebox musical Head Over Heels. L Morgan Lee made history this year as the first openly transgender person to be nominated and go on to win a Tony Award for her work as a featured actress in the musical A Strange Loop.

According to the Associated Press, other principal and featured Broadway actors who have identified as trans include Alexandra Billings in The Nap, Becca Blackwell in the play Is This a Room, Alexandra Billings in Wicked and Kate Bornstein and Ty Defoe in Straight White Men.

“Chicago's Roxie Hart is one of the most recognizable, iconic and beloved characters in the history of Broadway, and a true talent like Angelica Ross will delight audiences with her impressive acting, singing and performance skills," GLAAD Vice President of Communications & Talent Anthony Allen Ramos said in a statement provided to People Magazine.
