The Squad Continues to Grow

By David T. Valentin

While we wait in grueling anticipation for the results of the presidential election, progressives celebrate the reelection of the squad. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib were all reelected to serve in the House of Representatives in some landslide victories in their respective districts.

As the news came in, Ilhan Omar tweeted “Our sisterhood is resilient,” with four matching congratulatory posts of each member of the squad.

But the progressive wave doesn’t stop there. Justice Democrats, the small progressive wing of the Democratic Party who helped elect each member of the squad, celebrates victories in New York City’s 16th District with Jamaal Bowman, in Missouri’s 1st District with Cori Bush, and in Illinois’ 3rd District with Marie Newman.

Each member ran on a platform grounded by a strong message for the working class, Medicare for all, and the Green New Deal.

Executive director of the Justice Democrats, Alexandra Rojas, commented in an independent article, “The Congress Joe Biden could likely be inheriting is far more progressive than the one Barack Obama inherited in 2009 and can help make the Biden administration the most progressive administration in generations.”

Whether Joe Biden wins or Donald Trump wins, the progressive message is growing, and it might be growing enough to incite some real, positive change for this country in the coming years.
