We’ve all waited years for Cassandra Peterson’s memoir, and were excited just to read what the life and times of The Mistress of the Dark was like, so no one expected the blockbuster news that Peterson had been in a loving relationship with a women for the past 19 years.
In the just-published memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark, the horror queen revealed that after she divorced her husband a friendship with a fellow divorcee turned into something much ore, and has continued for 19 years until the present.
Said the horror maven, “I’ve got to be truthful,” as she explained why she revealed this persona information, also explaining that when she came of age, being in a gay relationship was so much more problematic for a celebrity, especially one who depended upon her sex appeal to attract an audience.
“As Cassandra, it wouldn't have mattered to me that people knew about our relationship, but I felt the need to protect Elvira in order to keep my career alive. Elvira has always had a thing for men, and men have a thing for her, so I worried that if I announced I was no longer living the 'straight life,' my fans would feel lied to, call me a hypocrite, and abandon me," she reasoned.
"Would my fans hate me for not being what they expected me to be? I'm very aware that there will be some who will be disappointed and maybe even angry, but I have to live with myself, and at this point in my life, I've got to be truthful about who I am."
