British actor Julian Sands who charmed us in A Room with a View has been missing for more than 10 days since he went hiking in the San Bernadino Mountains in California. His car was recovered last week, and the search for the 65 year-old actor is on-going.
Yesterday the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office shared a Twitter statement from Sands’ family (both his adult sons have been active in the search) thanking the various organizations searching for the actor which included a specialist dog and cave teams.
According to various reports, cell phone pings from January 15th had led officials to believe Sands, a longtime resident of the Los Angeles area, went missing near the Mt. Baldy area of the San Gabriel Mountains, northeast of Los Angeles.
Weather conditions in Los Angels have been dangerous the past few days preventing helicopter search and warning of a possible avalanche. Another hiker was also reported missing near Mt. Baldy yesterday.
According to a 2020 article in The Guardian, as avid hiker, Sands said that he is happiest when “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning.” He told that interviewer that he had come close to death in the early 1990s when hiking in the Andes Mountains above 20,000 feet with three others. A storm had blown in and “some guys close to us perished.”
Sands once conducted an entire interview from the face of the Mittellegi Ridge on the Eiger Mountain in the Swiss Alps.
