Stonewall Inn Is Saved

Remember when news articles reported that The Stonewall Inn, the famous New York City landmark for the LGBTQ+ community, was in financial trouble due to the coronavirus? Well, since then a GoFundMe campaign for Stonewall Inn has been posted and since last week the campaign has garnered up $250k from the Gill Foundation along with another $250k from donors.

According to Gothamist.com, “Scott Miller and Tim Gill…said… ‘Stonewall is a cornerstone of LGBTQ history and it must be protected. Queer people of color – including trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major – led the uprisings against police brutality at Stonewall and in doing so helped spark the movement for LGBTQ equality. We must preserve that history and the legacy of the activists who led the charge.’”

It’s important to know the monthly rent for the space is $40,000, a pretty hefty amount for New York City even with the popularity of bar, during the pandemic impossible to cover.

Along with the donation from the Gill Foundation, the GoFundMe for staff of the Inn has also garnered $298k.
