On December 12th Lambda Literary and Publishing Triangle joined together to host a fabulous event at the Ritz Bar and Lounge on West 46th street in New York City; a small bar with, well, a bar, and a back room with a spotlighted disco ball, a DJ stage, a dance floor, and benches lined up against the walls. And how could any real party function without happy hour priced drinks and free snacks provided to the guests?
About 20 minutes after the event kicked off, Lambda’s executive director Sue Landers and Triangle’s Margaree Little discussed the importance of gathering LGBT voices together, whether they be editors, writers and/or publishers under one roof and one cause.
Landers went on to say those who create queer stories and those who help facilitate bringing queer stories into the world should be celebrated, as queer voices aren’t always heard or given a platform to be heard.
Little discussed the importance of, for the first time, co-sponsoring with Lambda Literary for a mixer as it demonstrates that literary groups act as one in giving queer voices a platform.
And indeed the amount and variety of people who attended can attest to that queer unity. Queer folks from all different ages, all different genders, and all different sexualities celebrated under one roof the progress that has been made and still must be made to ensure that queer voices are represented accurately and heard within literature.
Landers also announced that the host for this year’s Lambda Literary awards in June 8, 2020 at NYU’s Skirball Center will be none other than Saturday Night Live’s newest member, Bowen Yang.
