The Story Behind That Handmaid’s Tale Wedding
In case you’ve been living under a rock, or just overwhelmed with the impeachment hearings, you might have missed the story about the Canadian couple who came to Cambridge, Canada to have their perfect Handmaid’s Tale wedding photo shoot. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is set in Cambridge and the wall in this couple’s romantic wedding kiss photo is the one where victims of Gilead justice are hanged in the novel and TV series, so we’re not quite sure what they were trying to say here.
Now this isn’t as tone deaf and tasteless as Kylie Jenner’s Handmaid’s Tale-themed 2018 birthday party for a friend (it was her friend’s favorite TV show and she served Under His Eye Tequila).
According to various reports, the handmaids in the wedding photo were photoshopped in. And the wedding itself was not Handmaid Tale-themed. And there was no Under His Eye Tequila served.
According to Time Magazine, the photographers were the ones who conceived of the Cambridge photo shoot, so they explained their thoughts. Because both the photographers and the bride and groom are huge fans of the show, and they were shooting on-site at Cambridge Mill, it seemed fitting “The image and entire show touches on the oppression faced by the gay community, women, and many other minority groups,” said Shawn Van Daele, one half of Van Daele and Russell photography.
